Cigar Myths and Misconceptions

January 9, 2026

People like to say they know all about cigars, but a lot of what gets passed down is just not true. Many of these stories can sound convincing so separating fact from fiction can be confusing for the uninitiated. As a cigar company, part of our responsibility is helping people enjoy their cigars with a clear understanding of what truly shapes flavor, strength, and quality.

Myths often arise from old traditions, word of mouth, or assumptions about appearance, which can leave shoppers confused or unsure about what to choose. By clearing up these misconceptions, we give smokers the confidence to explore blends, wrappers, and formats based on real characteristics rather than misconceptions. This leads to better expectations, better purchases, and a more enjoyable experience with every stick.

Myth 1: Darker-Colored Cigars Are Always Stronger

Why some believe it: Many people assume that a darker wrapper means “stronger” flavor or nicotine hit.

The truth: The color of the wrapper leaf has no guaranteed link to strength. Rather than wrapper darkness, strength depends on the tobacco blend and filler leaves.

A “Maduro” or dark-wrapper cigar may taste richer or sweeter (often thanks to longer fermentation), but it may not always be stronger than a lighter-wrapped cigar.

Myth 2: Bigger Cigars Are Always Stronger

Why some believe it: Bigger size = more tobacco = stronger smoke.

The truth: Just like the color of a cigar, the size isn’t indicative of the cigar strength. As above, the strength is determined by the type of tobacco used in the filler. Some very large cigars can actually deliver a milder, more gradual flavor evolution, especially early on in the smoke. A larger cigar has more tobacco and can burn longer whereas shorter and smaller cigars burn shorter.

Myth: Cigars From Particular Countries (for example, Cuba) Are Automatically The “Best”

Why some believe it: Because of history, marketing, or reputation, especially the aura around Cuban cigars.

The truth: Quality should be judged by craftsmanship, consistency, tobacco quality, and blend, not just country of origin. In fact, high-quality cigars are produced all over the world. Many non-Cuban cigars compete with or outperform their Cuban counterparts in taste and build. Call us a little biased, but we like American cigars grown with Italian traditions.
A good cigar experience starts with good information. When shoppers understand what truly drives flavor, strength, and construction, they can make choices based on their own tastes instead of old rumors. Clearing up these myths helps newcomers feel more at ease and gives seasoned smokers a chance to appreciate cigars in a new way. At the end of the day, the best cigar is the one you enjoy, chosen with clarity rather than guesswork. If you’re ready to explore blends crafted with care and tradition, shop from our stock online.
